In answer to your letter of the 2nd inst. I fear I did not fully make myself understood in my former letter, which, as a matter of fact, was with the object of obtaining an interview that I might personally place the matter fully before you.

On the 19th May 1902, I was present at a fire in Hong Kong in my capacity as a member of the Police, and whilst standing on a verandah adjoining the burning building, it collapsed, and in the fall I received serious bodily injuries of such a nature as, coupled with the shock, left me more open to climatic influence than I had been before, and also prevented me from obtaining employment in England in any branch of the service, not being able to pass the Doctor. I have felt the effects of these injuries more severely since my return to England.

It was upon this point that I wished to solicit your kind consideration, and my statement that I had received no gratuity referred to that fact, and I must express my regret for causing any misunderstanding. The amount of gratuity I received was $250 in the currency of Hong Kong (1/10 per Dollar) and had no reference to the accident.

I shall be pleased to answer any questions upon the matter or give any further information you may require.

I am, Sir,

Your humble Servant,

Joseph Saylor

Late Hongkong Police
